The Exhibitionist is a revisitation of REK’s ultimate animal muse “Flappy” the rescued red-tailed black cockatoo from NSW. The Gold Acanthus Motif sees Flappy in his most smouldering incarnation to date. Painted as REK’s second entry to the 2019 annual THECA wildlife art prize.
REK continues to explore a softer and refined individualising of the feathers than seen in earlier work of the series while the familiar use of patterned fabric used as a base for The Exhibitionist remains true to the essence of REK’s signature wildlife paintings.
The exhibitionist displays full crest and beard and fixes his arresting gaze upon the viewer with his slightly exaggerated and piercing eye.
There is a starkly deeper use of colour palate and impossibly fine detail in this work than previously seen cockatoo paintings by REK as the evolution of this wildlife series continues to explore new frontiers.
