The inspiration for this painting came from a song that was being rehearsed (by the dancers of the Temple of Fine Arts Perth) \"Hey Chandra Mauli‚ Hey Chandrashekara\" . The words convey the meaning of the lord who is adorned by the crescent moon‚ the lord who rules the triple worlds (physical‚ mental and spirit) See http://www.himalayanacademy.com/resources/books/dws/dws_mandala-09.html
As a dancer myself‚ I perceive and interconnect the rhythms that are common to our world. Like our heartbeat‚ the nature sounds that we hear around us like the crickets‚ dashing waves of the ocean upon the shores as well as the rising moon and sun‚ as the same rhythmic motions. These very same rhythms cascade through our bodies as dance. Macro Movement of the Galaxies reflect and deflect as movement in every tiny motion through our limbs.
This deep reflection of rhythmic motion is used when I paint. Absorbing the sounds of the melody‚ depicting the lord of Dance Shiva‚ translates as motion of dance then are captured as movement on canvas. Thus is the initial underpainting. Then the \'ragas\'‚ that unfold the melody act as the painting strokes that form the eventual painting.
The oil painting on white silk depicts the cascading waters of River Ganges flowing over the form of Shiva. It is ancient and contemporary in the same note. Whether adorning a modern home or a traditional setting‚ it will create within one\'s mind images that will resonate within one\'s own rhythmic structure.
