This painting depicts a woman, in a state of undress but also a state of shame and despair. Her arms are crossed over her upper body and she leans forward, hiding her face and as if trying to shield her body from our gaze. We see her and yet we do not. It is a commentary on how women see themselves, particularly how their worth can feel as though measured by their body shape.
