Lawrence is a young artist who works at Papulankutja Artists at Blackstone, a remote community near the Gibson Desert in Western Australia. Born in Blackstone and taught painting by his mother (Jennifer Mitchell), Lawrence paints his country, showing important rock-holes throughout. Lawrence also paints ‘Wati Kutjara’ a traditional story about two goanna brothers who are travelling separately. As they return, they pass one another, but don’t recognise each other. The name of Lawrence’s home, ‘Papulankutja’ comes from this story, it means ‘to stare, without recognising.’
