‘Mother Revolution’ is a tribute to Comandante Ramona, an officer of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN). The EZLN is a revolutionary indigenous autonomist organisation based in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. One of the major aspects of the EZLN’s ideology is gender equality and women’s rights. As depicted, Ramona was famous for being masked and wearing traditional indigenous clothing.
