Description

I am mad about birds. If I'm not photographing trees, I'm probably photographing birds; and it saddens me that so many natural bird habitats are being lost and areas once filled with birdsong are now eerily silent. This is not always the fault of man - it happens after bushfires too, before full regeneration has taken place. I noticed that on a recent visit to the Black Hill Reserve, near Kyneton in Central Victoria. I never heard a single bird in the nearly three hours that I was there. It's an odd dichotomy that I am both saddened and inspired by these stark, barren, silent, damaged places. I find them eerily beautiful despite their obvious destruction. And, as with all my painting, this work is not so much OF a particular place, as my visual memory of a composite of places. I paint from the heart, seldom a specific location.
