'Birds and Broads', by Aimee Rytenskild depicts two female figures standing side by side. One figure holds a parrot that is in the midst of flying away, with another parrot perched on her shoulder. The second figure stares out at the viewer, with their hands holding onto each other. Each figure is adorned with hair that entwines and tangles and is reminiscent of tree roots, alluding to the connection between 'femininity' and 'mother nature'.
As a predominantly abstract painter, I have recently been inspired to create more figurative and representational works, as a way to more directly communicate subject matter. This painting is part of a series of a larger series of work that aims to explore the intrinsic relationship between societies associations of femininity and the environment, epitomised by the concept of 'mother nature'.
