Lace's etymology originates form the word 'noose' to ensnare or entrap.
As a young woman, I find it concerning how even in times of empowerment and equality, from a young age we're still encouraged to seek dependency, to "find a rich husband", get marriage and give up what makes us self-reliant to be a more "complete" woman; the idea of waiting for a man like a damsel in distress in order for our life to truly begin. The possible financial dependency that this encourages can leave women trapped, relying solely on a man to avoid falling into poverty unable to stand alone.
In my piece I wanted to explore the growing percentage of women in my generation, like myself, making the conscious choice to shed the pressures of marriage and the unknowing financial dependencies that can result and not let ourselves fall into the bridal noose - and instead to be comfortable to stand alone and find strength in our own independence.

This painting is apart of the 'Wedlock' series, one of which is featured in the 2018 Year 12 Perspectives Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Western Australia
