Boadicea was the Queen of the Iceni Tribe in Great Briton. Following the death of her husband, the Romans sought to redefine the power relationship. They flogged Boadicea, raped her daughters, and called in previous financial assistance to key Briton families. Boadicea led a revolt against the Romans and was initially successful in driving their forces out of key strongholds, including Colchester and Londinium (modern London), to the point where Nero seriously considered withdrawing all Roman forces from then Briton. Ultimately however, Suetonius succeeded in defeating Boadicea's forces. This painting represents that point in time when Boadicea determined to avenge the indignities inflicted upon her family and people.
