Similar to my Michelin Man paintings, this is an appropriation of a vintage advertising icon - the Mobil pegasus, an instantly recognisable image. As always with this kind of pop imagery, I wanted to subvert the original in a humorous or surrealistic way. The text 'keep watching the skies' comes from 1950s sci fi movie 'The Thing for Another World', where it refers to UFOs. To me personally, the painting and the image are more optimistic, a hope or wish for things to improve. I think in 2020 most of us are hoping for some unexpected intervention.
The surface of the painting is quite textured, and is built up of multiple layers of paint. It may be difficult to tell from the photo, but the pegasus is outlined in pure white, and set against a more creamy, warm white background. The red of the horse also has touches of orange. The rough brushstrokes are in counterpoint to the clean edges of the design, creating a nice balance. The sides of the canvas are painted, and it's ready to be hung without framing. The painting has a glossy varnish.
A colourful pop art image that will look great on any wall!
