Acrylic Paint on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.
Signed on the front.
I’ve been a big fan of Nick Cave since I was a teenager. Before I started painting Penguin books I was painting a lot of monochrome, surrealist landscapes (I had one in the Sulman Prize in 2012). I haven’t had much time to paint them lately but the idea came to me to combine Nick Cave with that style, and the idea wouldn’t go away.
A lot of Nick’s songs are about strange, desolate wastelands, and so the imagery probably doesn’t need any particular explanation. I was tempted for a while to paint his hand red, but thought that might be a bit too distracting.
Nick is painted quite roughly/expressively, while the floating buildings are more neat and careful. I like that dynamic. The paint I’ve used is very dark brown, so the painting has a kind of sepia tone. The painting has a gloss varnish. The sides of the canvas are painted, and it’s ready to hang without needing to be framed.
