This painting is part of my ‘Sleep’ series, which started in 2014 and has been exploring the sleeping states of physical performers mainly. Chloé de Buyl-Pisco is both an acrobat and a dancer, and derives a great deal of creative inspiration through her connectedness with nature, with whales in particular. She sleeps with the light on and a cloth over her eyes and many of her dreams involve whales.
The main inspiration of this painting came from an actual experience that she had of being on an extended, whale watching trip. One night she turned all the external lights off and lay on the bow of the boat to meditate. At some point, several Humpback whales came close and were calling and she continued to be still and meditate, listening to and feeling them. So in this painting I am exploring her connection, merging and her excitement at the connection.
