I was on a painting trip to the Flinders Ranges. On Easter Sunday I was painting a scene along the creek late in the afternoon. I finished for the day, packed up my gear, and headed back along the creek for the pub.
I came across this scene in a clearing amid the gum trees, a crowd of people attending a bush mass. A variety of people, stock men, station hands, bush workers, local indigenous people, and tourists who came to the Flinders, were in attendance. The scene was bathed in a golden light, but also a hue of red dust that covered all, including the jeep. The priest came with red dust covering his stockman riding boots, in stark contrast to his white vestment and the snow white alter cloth that covered the make-shift alter.
After mass was over the congregation moved to the pub, and I went with them. I was intrigued by a kangaroo and its joey, who were watching the whole scene with great interest.
