Artwork Description

Oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed certificate of authenticity.

It was an honour to have this piece exhibited at the annual d'Arcy Doyle Art Awards. I believe this lighthouse, which sits atop the cliffs and shines bright like a star over Byron Bay, is one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world.

I've been visiting it my whole life, the trip always involving a swim at Wategos Beach and a walk along the cliffs spotting dolphins, whales and sea turtles. Finally I had the chance to paint it, so I drove up one autumn day and took some pictures to reference for this piece.

My goal was to capture the gleam of the lighthouse's brick against the seemingly endless expanse of blue it presides over. One of my favourite elements turned out to be the little people I included -- the tourists, the walkers, the photographers, all admiring this stunning, sparkling spot of Earth one way or another. I want this painting to serve as my own symbol of admiration for this location in Australia I love so much.

An oil painting of orange and pink poppy flowers in a warm glass vase on canvasOil painting of a little hut on Achill Island in Ireland, green grass and blue ocean with cliffs below. This is a painting of the first-to-bloom nasturtium flowers I grew from seed. I love their unruliness and the green and orange colour combination. I also wanted to capture the flowersโ€™ shadows and compliment their wild, free growth with plenty of texture.Poppies have a wild, unruly nature to them which has always captivated me; their petals are like tissue paper, soft and ephemeral and unique in each flower.

This painting is an exploration of colour and texture, and hopefully a pretty reminder to always bloom wildy, like poppies do in spring.
