Oil Paint on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.
Signed on the front.
Inspired by the timeless use of drapery as a framing device in painting, this work, In Fair Verona, comes from Esbenshade’s ‘Repoussoir’ series that considers what these compositional elements could have bore witness to, the narratives that play out in traditional genre paintings and what additional un-captured dramas could be occurring outside the frame. This work features a piece of red cotton suspended by ropes that tether the fabric, ratcheting up the tension through the contortion of the object through it’s being bound.
The title of this work references the opening lines of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' evoking a sense of drama and romantic tragedy.
