Artwork Description

'Tempest , an oil painting by Caroline Esbenshade, features a woman suspended over a turbulent sea beneath stormy clouds. The indigo waves hint at deep ocean depths and the navy grey skies an oncoming squall. Like a ship at sea the faceless woman in the work will have to endure the coming storm. In art and literature the sea has long been used to symbolise internal experiences, wether emotional or spiritual. In this work we can relate how an emotional upheaval can feel like being caught in a sea storm with no option but to endure.
