Artwork Description

Oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed on the back.

My research originated from a collection of handheld retro items and textiles. Using these objects has been a way of gathering thoughts and satisfying my curiosities around tactility and object making. I look at a playful way of deconstructing and assembling cuttings from second hand Australian House and Garden magazines to create illusory space. These realms feel distorted and overwhelming yet comfortably inhabitable through the description of interior furnishings and objects. Informed by 1960s hard edge abstraction and an investigation into the domestic experience through craft and sewing, my work challenges traditional representational canons and skews perceptions of familiar spaces. My paintings are also a way of investigating the formal dominance of colour and pattern which gesture to the trends and style choices of the 60s, locating my painting in a retro sphere.

All art by Charlotte Tatton

Gleaning imagery from second-hand craft books and house and garden magazines from the 1960s, the collaged composition of 'Redecorating' delves into notions of space, scale and form. Piecing together fragments that transcend traditional still life and domestic paintings, the work highlights the intricate textures and forms of 20th-century object and furniture design.

Redecorating seeks to evoke curiosity around decoration in the home and invites viewers to reconsider their perceptions of the familiar.
