Artwork Description

Aren't horses from our mythologies magical? I often wonder what it is about the mystery and magic in horses that inspired humans to imagine such creatures as Pegasus and Unicorns. In this work I wanted to contrast the simplicity of white against a more dramatic background. His outstretched wings suggest flight.

Background reds and browns were first. In all my work I use charcoal to draw in my subject. then I rub most of the linework out just so I can see the edges. Then comes the paint. It is an organic process. Finally with an almost dry brush I place the light shafts over the whole work. In a mystical encounter, the horse and the bird engaged with each other in a spiritual dance, their energies intertwining, creating an ethereal harmony that transcended the boundaries of the physical world. My process is always organic, once I am satisfied with the drawing's accuracy. You will see in most of my work garden, floral and symbolic themes. I paint them into my subject's body. The symbolism is always about beauty and freedom.
