The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is a frequent visitor to Australian suburban gardens particularly where some mixed seed is put out occasionally. As a painter I am drawn to birds that strike engaging poses. The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is quite a ham in this regard. Its acting skills do not extend to it singing - it has one of the most shattering, ear-piercing calls in the bird world. When the are in a disturbed flock ear plugs are definitely needed!! This is quite a large bird - often more than 500mm in length and is now common to abundant. Its yellow crest seems to be used for communication - often fanned out to its full extent with a head-down posture when it is alarmed or disturbed.
