The Laughing Kookaburra has caused amazement and amusement since the beginning of the earliest settlement of the continent. Its raucous laughing call has probably been heard by more cinema goers than any other as it is often a go-to call for any jungle film. When young and sleek its kinship with the Kingfisher family is clear to see. More often than not we see a fluffier version often a harbinger of rain. It is most prolific along the east coast of Australia and the adjoining hinterland and a common visitor to gardens.
