Description

The American Bison is a sad story of survival and decline. In the early 1800s, bison were hunted to a fraction of their original numbers prior to European settlement in North America. Not long ago, 50 million bison roamed wild, but they were so savagely pursued that only 500 existed after the 'great slaughter'. Their demise was due to a careless expediency to remove them from newly developed railway tracks, or slaughtered for their pelts and meat. The remaining bones were either used for fertiliser, sugar refinery, or fashioned into fine bone ornaments.

Fortunately, bison numbers are recovering, with around 500,000 animals in existence today.
