This piece is part of a playful series exploring censorship and modesty and came about after thinking how odd it is that some parts of our bodies are deemed acceptable for display, whilst other (very small) parts are deemed unacceptable to see!
Each piece features only that part of the body that would be found underneath a familiar garment, or undergarment.
Without exception, man has always sought to clothe, manipulate and adorn the human form.
Our need to protect ourselves from the changing elements has led us to imagine and create an inexhaustible range of ways to cover and adorn ourselves.
We have simultaneously developed an intricately nuanced philosophy to accompany this basic need. We thus render ourselves unacceptable to each other in our natural state, except in very specific contexts.
It has also led us to use clothing and self-adornment as the most powerful tools at our disposal with which to express ourselves. Through clothing and adornment we may define ourselves as ‘unique’ (an elusive quality impossible to ever fully attain) or, more commonly, to align ourselves with a particular ‘tribe’ with whom we identify, and by whom we strive to be accepted.
Our follies of censorship, modesty and that most shameful imposition, embarrassment, are testament to the power of clothing and adornment, imprinted upon us over millennia. This has resulted in an ever evolving, complex form of unspoken communication that dictates acceptance, judgement and scorn.
