The floating leaves of the lilies in the main pond in the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens provide a striking contrast between red and green as they catch the sun, and the intervening spaces of peaceful water afford a glimpse into the depths and interesting reflections of the over-arching trees. The perspective I walked past this pond many times on my way to work. I have produced many small, detailed paintings of waterlily leaves and flowers, but always had an urge to go bigger, and this is the result. Of course, I was inspired by Monet, but my style is much more constrained and literal. I think it could make a small room space seem bigger. Alternatively, in a lager space, it would particularly suit a position surrounded by indoor greenery, where a visual plunge into the tranquil pool would invoke a cool, contemplative mood.
