My art story is one of fashion and folly. I was born in Canada and emigrated to Australia in the 80s. I remember always drawing ladies in my youth and was encouraged by my mom to look through magazines to get ideas. After leaving school, I wanted to be a fashion illustrator. At the local art college I inquired about their fashion illustration course, only to be told it was no longer running. They suggested I knock on doors and see if any fashion shops would use any of my sketches. As luck would have it, I got my first job at a local ladies clothing store as a shop assistant and part-time artist for their clothing line. Lucky me! I was 19 and I thought: I've made it! That was 1980.I left that job after two years and moved to Australia and trained as a typesetter then graphic designer. I put any dreams of art aside, as I simply did not know how to be 'an artist'.After a tumultuous decade (1997-2007), I had a spiritual awakening and revived my drawing skills. My pencil just leapt onto the page and I embarked on an amazing path, one which has had many twists and turns and has led me to run my own studio and continue my passion for fashion. I am now running Renaissance Studios Sydney (http://www.facebook.com/renaissancestudiossydney where I paint bridal portraits and illustrate for bridal magazines. Focusing on weddings and children, my work is highly realistic. My style is reminiscent of the old school illustrators like Norman Rockwell and Rene Gruau: I always try to tell a story. I use chalk, pencil and watercolour and am fascinated with painting on wood at the moment. I will paint pretty much any subject involving people, and still life. I am not into abstract, nor landscapes---it's just not my thing. I prefer fabrics and folds to foliage. I accept commissions, so please drop me a line. I work from photos or live sketching.I hope you enjoy my portfolio. Please drop me a line if you wish to enquire about anything at [email protected] or visit www.drawntofashion.com.au
