Gymea is an iconic Australian flower, magnificent in proportions and glorious to the painter's eye in texture, movement and colour. The textural component is exaggerated in this work, to great effect, with all of the brushstrokes visible on the canvas. When they were in season, I purchased a gymea from my local florist. The 'flower' was taller than both of my children, and I dragged a large outdoor urn inside to hold this oversized magnificent specimen, the subject of this painting. It caused a lot of fun, including the preparation of this painting, it was most enjoyable. Unframed, ready to hang.
