Oil on stretched canvas, ready to hang.
Signed on the back.
This is my interpretation of Medusa, who is instantly recognisable from Greek Mythology. Best known for her hair which was made of snakes and her ability to turn any onlooker to stone. There are many versions of her story and over the centuries her story and appearance have changed.
Some stories have her as beautiful while others have her as grotesque. There are versions where Medusa is a young maiden seduced by Poseidon in the temple of Athena while others versions have her as being violently taken by him, in all cases she is punished by having her hair turned to snakes.
I have based my work on a Louis Janmot 1845 painting.
The initial layers I did in acrylic with the final layers in oil. This forms part of a "Women in History" series that I am working on. I have combined both traditional and contemporary techniques to produce a modern painting about an ancient story.
This work is not framed but is painted around the edges so it is able to be hung as is.
Photo taken before varnish and UV protection is applied to avoid glare.
