Artwork Description

Thanks to my involvement with the Rockhampton Art Gallery and the Collection Intervention exhibition (10 Feb – 3 June 2018) I’ve spent some time researching artists from the ‘Cream’ collection and been inspired to look at the modern meaning of the still life painting tradition and the effect of social media on this theme. Exploring still life from a topographical perspective (aka the flat lay) whilst still exploring themes close to my heart. This new work is called Jam and Cream or ‘#Morning Tea’ and reflects and responds to the Cream collection. Making a subtle if not cerebral reference to the importance of the inclusion of the female artists to our Australian history, and the importance of celebrating the mundane moments held so dearly by us all.
As women, and a mother, my role is defined by resilience. Life, as symbolised by the tablecloth in my painting, is a journey of up’s and downs. As a mother of four, I know only two well, the struggle of maintaining my personal identity, whilst giving my whole heart and energy to the needs and wants of others. The resilience to give them my ‘best self’ in order to see them grow into theirs. I maintain that a mother’s role is one to be cherished, and to know the love of your children is the greatest gift, but I am fully aware that this seemingly glamourous, naturally occurring woman birthright is fraught with agony and turbulence. Too often through social media, we see the orchestrated images of the ‘perfect world’ a carefully curated image of how we wish others to see us, but it is not always this sweet in reality. Having said this, a true life, filled with grubby children, and a crumpled tablecloth, with homemade scones on the table is as close to heaven as I can imagine! Holding that moment in a painting, of the second before my children devour their afternoon tea, whilst regaling me of tales of their day, is a moment I wish could last forever. Their in lies the secret to resilience; to savour the sweetest moments every day.
