Oil Paint on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.
Signed on the front.
Thirty years now, and her moods still rock him. He never knows when it is coming, but like a flash storm she rages, she clouds over and the cold descends. He leaves her to it. He waits till he knows she is finding her feet once more and he slips out the front door, barefoot to the beach. It is better when the winds blow, when the sand rasps his flesh and the surf thunders. Looking to the horizon, he doesn't know why he feels numb but the weather often expresses what he cannot. He climbs around the headland, finding his place in the sheltered space between boulders and he sits and gazes. His mind fills with nothing. He will bring her a shell or the discarded carapace of a sea urchin. She will have started cooking dinner and will proffer her cheek for a kiss, softening as he rubs her shoulders. Tonight, they will curl together in front of the television and he will be none the wiser, but grateful, nevertheless.
