New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places in the world, in particular the South Island and the areas around Queenstown. I spent a couple of weeks in Glenorchy just before Christmas and before Covid19. Glenorchy is a small town at the far end of the Lake Wakatipu. The air is fresh, the scenery stunning and I felt the stresses of everyday life slip away from me. Back now in my studio in Melbourne, I am yearning for the freedom to travel again but am lucky to have my sketches, memories and photographs to work from. I am hugely inspired by Wendy Sharpe and the wonderful colours she uses and the freedom of her mark making. In this painting I used a large brush so not to get caught up in the details. I used a variety of colours to reflect my happy and peaceful state of mind and I tried to capture the light at an early point in the day.
