DESCRIPTION

On a holiday beach walk I was struck by the enormous diversity of rocks along the sea edge.
This scene shows the transforming power of water. Not only to carve the rocks away from the land but to erode them in such unusual ways.
In high tide, these rocks would be submerged; their beauty hidden.
In low tide, they are lit up by the sun and cast dramatic shadows to highlight the most bizarre and fantastic shapes and textures. There are pools and pockets, signs of life within to explore.

Natural cardboard was chosen for its sandy brown colouring. Its smoothness allowed for the technique of blending pastel. In contrast, gesso primer was used in the areas for pastels to grip.
