Description

This art work was inspired by Japanese artists, printmakers and textile weavers of the 19th and 18th centuaries, in particular. Also, the cultural practice of Golden Week. I was in Kyoto during Golden Week and there were many opportunities to observe graceful women dressed in traditional kimonos. Many attending temples to pay respect to family ancestors. In the Gion district, home to the famous Kabuki Theatre, there was an opportunity to see Geisha’s delicately stepping along tlhe narrow streets or, in one instance, alighting from a black limousine. I wanted to capture the vibrant colour of the costumes but also, the calm demeanour and graceful movement of the women. Frequently, an image of brightly coloured birds came to mind. But also the prescriptive traditions that inform the life of a Geisha.

#Geisha. Japanese. Costume. Colour. Tradition.
