Early Dutch explorers named it Williams River. Its name Yardie comes from Aboriginal sources. Yardie Creek is a highlight of the Cape Range National Park,The ancient gorge has deep, dark water, red limestone cliff faces and a wonderful array of bird and wildlife, including the black-footed wallaby, Euros and red kangaroos. I have visited this place quite a few times over the years on camping trips, and can I tell you that Yardie Creek is nature at it’s best. It’s beautiful yet rugged.
The local Aboriginal tribe, the Jinigudera, a part of the West Thalanyji people are coastal dwellers, ranging from Tent Island through to Bulbali Point on the west coast of the Ningaloo. The Jinigudera people call themselves salt water people as they have always lived by the waters. Sites in the area provide the oldest dated evidence for development of marine resources in Australia.
