This painting is a favorite and was commissioned as a "memories piece". The work depicts Florence from above with the Florence Cathedral and it's enclosures the focus of the painting. The viewer gaze is drawn to the cathedral dominating and detailed vibrant terracotta tiled dome and beautifully colored marble facade.
On closer inspection the dome is demarcated by the stark greyness color of the walls that emulate the detailed round windows and gothic arched sculptured windowpanes. You can almost feel the heavenly and peaceful supremacy of the building, accessible, yet forbidden life of the cities citizens.
The artist has skillfully created an illusion of depth and distance though employing light and dark contrasting tones, as visible by the dark green hills beyond, extending into the heavenly contrasting mixture of blue skies, as if reaching for the divine.
