This painting was inspired by the apricot coloured, lemon scented eucalyptus trees that grow around Lake Hume on the Victorian and New South Wales border. This has been a favourite destination for many summer holidays, and I have always loved the smooth bark, intricate details and scimitar leaves of these gums, with their tantalising lemon scent after summer rain. In this painting, I try to capture the shifting shadows and flickering light of leaves against the branches, a reminder of the transience of beauty.
