The melted wax on the candles is a snapshot, a captured moment, experience or mood frozen in time, while simultaneously shows the passage of time. The symbolism of the candle: burning a candle to pray or to meditate with, or to provide light and security when it is dark, lends these works a haunting spiritual and ritualistic quality.
In this work I was continuing to explore my love of textures and building up the canvas surface by using many household materials, such as gap filler, plaster, wood glue, bitumen and household candle wax. I found using those grittier, denser mediums the best way for me to breathe life into my candles and for the works to tell a story.
Each of my candle paintings has details and mediums for the viewer to explore, which both entices and engages. The viewer has the opportunity to ponder, contemplate and relate to my work, with the title providing a hint to my inspirational thought, mood or experience behind each piece.
