I had just moved house and my surroundings were new which was a welcome distraction from lockdown. Spending many consecutive days/weeks at home gave me plenty of time to stare at my new walls!
The simple pleasures! I noticed light and reflections stretched across the wall entertaining me throughout the afternoon. I loved watching the shadows moving swiftly between sharp focus and subtle diffusion. Constantly changing during the long, drawn out days. I was very inspired to capture these images on canvas - a challenge or ‘extension’ on my usual ‘still life’ genre.
Applying subtle light layers of oil paint in transparent layers and building up the stronger contrasts in some areas, helps to suggest movement. Giving the shadows a life of their own in canvas.
Fleetingly, they bring movement and atmosphere, falling on surfaces they create form and clarity;
The familiar shapes of my favourite green glass jug, cut flowers and coloured vessels created beautiful prisms of colour and refracted light.
