Description

FOR ART FOR SEAFARERS ENTRY
Brief description of Artwork:
The circular canvas makes a direct reference to the lenses we view the world through not just in science, like the microscope, but through out all aspects of our conscious and unconscious life. It also has the illusion of viewing an underwater seascape as if by ocean-liner or submarine window view. What do we see through this window…an imagined landscape? A floating island welcoming seafarers and lost souls. Or a view of the constellations. Maybe a micro-seascape. Perhaps a weird mythical sea creature from the darkest depths of the ocean.

Artist statement:
The sea and its creature’s find it’s way back into my artwork as a subject, context, material and formal element. I am deeply connected to the Southern Ocean of Australia where I grew up. Here I am exploring aquatic themes and the microscopic minutiae of life with its boundless relationship to the creation of all life forms, humanity and consciousness. For me the sea is a place of great mystery and imaginings as well as providing peacefulness, healing and joy.

WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS PAINTING?
This funny little blobby creature shape naturally brings a sense of fun and happiness.
The organic nature of the shapes created and the paint flow suggest so sort of blobby sea creature or cellular life form. The shapes and the colours are inspired by sea life and underwater wonderlands.
These round canvases are fun. I love creating imaginary spaces with a view into another world where beautiful mysterious shapes and lines flow gently across the surface. This is another painting belonging to my series exploring aquatic themes and the microscopic minutiae of life. The circular shape of the canvas makes a direct reference to the lenses we view the world through not just in science, like the microscope, but through out all aspects of our conscious and unconscious life. It also has the illusion of viewing an underwater seascape as if by ocean-liner or submarine window view.

So what do we see through this window…is this an imagined landscape? A floating island welcoming seafarers and lost souls. Or a view of a planet, a new universe. Maybe a micro-scape or amoeba.
Or a weird mythical sea creature from the darkest depths of the ocean newly discovered and imagined. A kind of amorphous mutant organism. A blob with the suggestion of a mouth, or mouths, and eyes but is mute and sightless. A highly intelligent being perhaps or brainless organism?
The sea and its creatures seems to often find its way back into my artwork as a subject, context and formal element. It reveals my passionate love of the sea and all things briny particularly the influence of the locale where I grew up – overlooking Bass Strait from a hilltop farm at Flinders. From me the sea is a place of great mystery and imaginings as well as peacefulness and healing joy.
'I feel like I am looking into another magical world,' is a comment I so often receive from this series of paintings. This is what I enjoy about my paintings; they can take a persons mind to somewhere else and make you smile with a sense of joy and wonderment.

These round canvases look gorgeous on their own, intimate and sweet. But if you have more space and can hang a few together they make a spectacular Gallery Wall.
