Welcome the 'Aqua Vitae' Series.

The series is inspired by wine and the 'waters of life' or 'Aqua Vitae'. The influence of wine as subject came about from a commission I was asked to do about this poetic grape nectar. The process and history of wine making not only have a strong connection with painting and art history, but they relate in so many wonderful ways, colour, joy, enrichment to name a few. Both very much to do with providing multiple levels of sensual experiences and enriching the spirit. In this series the wine varietals came into their own. The rich deep colour and layers upon layer of process and history and of sensual enjoyment. Just like art.

I am not your stereotypical artist in so many ways with this one exception, I do appreciate wine in a similar way to my appreciation of art and the way historically, many artists have enjoyed this nectar. I love wine. I love the taste. I love the colour. The Chroma. The aroma. The feel. The process. The many similarities in the creation to art making and art appreciation and the multiple levels of sensual appeal. Hence when I was asked to do a commission about wine varietals I went to it with the fervour of a wine loving artisan and took the plan a tad further to create a series of works inspired by this heavenly ambrosia.

Such a joy to look into the lush characteristics of Shiraz and Pinot Noir. The generous warm tones on the palette and on the eye. The richness, generosity and depth. And then looking into the glass from above, the jewel of light coming through the colour, the wave of the swirl. I could go on forever about the richness of these experiences and the layers of history, but the pleasure is in the painting and the glass. Ultimately I wanted the paintings having an inner vibration, a sense of movement, energy, life for those looking at them.

What I enjoy most about my paintings is they make people smile with a sense of wonderment and feelings of happiness as well as giving their walls some oomph and colour.

These little canvases look gorgeous on their own, intimate and sweet. But if you have more space and can hang a few together and even mix it up with some different shapes, they make a spectacular Gallery Wall.

Jacquelyn Stephens is a Melbourne based artist who has been successfully exhibiting her paintings for over 20 years since completing a BFA in Painting at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts. She has gained an extensive knowledge of Art, art materials, techniques and theory from working closely in the arts industries and in her own art practice. Jacquelyn works full time from her studio on the Melbourne fringe. She has had several successful solo and group exhibitions in commercial galleries and artists run spaces. Her paintings can be seen in many media publications and are held in private collections worldwide. Many of the key themes in her work have been informed by her interest in water, nature, science and the domain of medicine.
