Artwork Description

this painting in gouache and inks represents a portage's man o war jellyfish. For me, discovering that the tentacles actually harboured a myriad colonies of creatures parallel the complexity of our societies . this wondrous being drifts at the mercy of ocean currents and each element live s in symbiosis with the others.

In his book Researches Into the Early History of Mankind and the Development of Civilization, the turn-of-the-20th-century anthropologist Edward Burnett Tylor writes that the world turtle concept likely first appeared in Hindu mythology. In one Vedic story, the form of the god Vishnuโ€™s second avatar, Kurma, is a great turtle, which provides a celestial foundation upon which a mountain is balanced. This image fascinated me and I created this painting with the turtle carrying a world in the sea above the ruins of past civilisations swirled with images of coral, fish and the wate. The viewer will be able to explore the many ideas in this workgleaming rainbow coloured heron flying from a lake
