This is Mick Bradford’s late Clydesdale stallion Sergeant. Sergeant was one of the star performers at Mick Bradford’s Heavy Horse Demonstration Days on his farm at Yangan to raise money for CareFlight, now LifeFlight. Here Sergeant is pulling a hay rake. This painting was exhibited at the Gatton Heavy Horse Days and one of Mick’s colleagues camp up and laughed at this painting because the shafts were too low – he thought Mick should knlw by now how to hitch a horse! Shortly Mick came along to check it out. Ah yes, they were too low! At his own Heavy Horse Day during which I had photographed Sergeant showing his prowess, the young lad assisting him, had made the chains holding the shafts up way to long, and though this didn’t worry an experienced and placid horse like old Sergeant, it could panic a young horse if they bumped its legs when turning. As you can see Sergeant wasn’t the least bit perturbed by the low slung shafts and completed his task happily and efficiently. I do believe he was showing us all just how clever and reliable he was!
I love this painting – the fresh and immediate paintwork and quiet and happy efficiency of this pair enjoying their work raking the lucerne.
