I’ve always found the ocean to be calming, even at its wildest. Even though I take every opportunity to be in the salty goodness, I’ve yet to learn to surf. But I dream of the experience of being inside the barrel, feeling at the same time the power and calm of the ocean. Natures personal gift to the ocean lover, a window into it’s heart. For now though, I live it through the magical world of painting.

This painting was inspired by Yallingup sunsets, which was created for the Vasse art awards. (It’s the one I’m holding in my profile picture.) I loved it so much I decided to keep it to hang in my own home. Its definitely a focal point in our home and I get lost staring into the barrel with it’s ever changing colours depending on the different light of the day.

I wanted to create something similar for other people to enjoy, as I find barrelling waves to be a powerful, mesmerising and calming statement piece in any home or work space.

Moonlit barrel was one of my favourite artworks to create as I didn’t have to think it through. Whilst listening to music and surrounded by other beautiful ocean images, it just flowed easily yet purposefully like the ocean.
It was created using acrylics on a stretched canvas and i feel the colours appear to change throughout the different lights of the day, giving the wave motion. Blue represents communicative, trustworthy and calming emotions which makes this a great focal point in any room.
