'What If?' is about that almost breathless moment when an idea occurs. It could be words for a song or a poem, a vision of what life could be like if that first step is taken towards some adventure.
It's a very personal moment, different for each individual, but I've chosen this girl to carry my 'What If' moment for a painting idea. It's a face I glimpsed somewhere, changed no doubt by my imagination, but sensitive and representative of new hope.
Despite the story behind it, this is a powerful painting which would have great presence in a room. Its bold design of large simple shapes and strong contrast is set off by the delicate colour and drawing of the background, many layers thick. In order to suggest an aged, exotic wallpaper, deep orange and pink tones were overlaid with rubbed back dirty whites. The finished effect is of a blushing ivory colour.
The botanical design with birds is from my imagination (though inspired by an Indian cashmere throw) and has charcoal, pencil and ink, all scribbled in and rubbed back. The exotic chair is from memories of a trip to Rajasthan.
I do hope you enjoy!
