A series of colour field works on paper.
The 300gsm Arches oil paper is masked off and the oil paint is roughly applied to create a high contrast image.
This series of works are simple and raw and are intended to highlight the differences between colour choice as well as communicating something of my artistic philosophy - perfection can never be achieved. Iki is an expression of simplicity, sophistication, spontaneity, and originality. It is ephemeral, straightforward, measured, and unselfconscious. Iki is not overly refined, pretentious, complicated and may signify a personal trait, or artificial phenomena exhibiting human will or consciousness.
The surface is textured with the action of my hand and the scraping tool used to apply the paint. Some works in this series are oil and cold wax, others are oil paint straight from the tube. The two colours are applied wet in wet, so there is some mingling between the layers. This is intended. The difference in the top and bottom layers in terms of area are also intended to be uneven.
Masking the edges is intended to create a clear separation between the image area and the painting - area's where paint had bled through the mask are also an intended and anticipated consequence of the process.
There may be errors, repeating patterns and surface anomalies - this is an intended part of this series.
The work requires framing to hang.
