Intrigues by the Indonesian people as a child (Indonesian was a Dutch colony for nearly 300 years) my memories at school, of geography of the Colonies and their cultures, and the black and white photo's and art affects were tantalizing. I do not exactly know why this was painted, did someone commissioned me or not, but I had it hanging in my studio for years unfinished. it was 'free' after a Dutch/Indonesian artist of the last century by the name of William Gerhard Hofker. Over my carrier of 50 years there have been commissions of collectors to copy a particular painting, especially in the beginning, and it was flattering to be chosen to copy any artist. Later it feels wrong, but then I must have learned something from it, and this was one of those. It is a lovely work and not a straight out copy.
