Hunting for a good antique was not only hard but very time consuming and expensive. One day a
French friend of ours offered to sell me a decanter. I immediately fell in love with it, and even
though it cost me the proverbial arm and a leg, I used this piece within different compositions and
incorporated it into several paintings. I might as well say that it was one of my favourite props. During an exhibition, a Chinese businessman from Taiwan offered to buy one of these particular paintings if he could also buy the decanter. I felt that this would be both a blessing and a curse, but eventually parted with it. I have never found another piece quite like it and there is always that sense of regret. The positive side is that it is no longer included in any more of my works so that people cannot say: “Oh look, there’s that decanter again.”
