In line with my general philosophy of pausing to appreciate small moments of beauty in everyday life, I have turned to the poetry of Basho (a Japanese poet from the Edo period who wrote about the beauty of the natural world). I am playfully imagining him back in the 17th century, observing the flowering and fruiting of his orange tree. The butterflies reference metamorphosis, and hint at the changed world that we now live in, as well as our basic human need to stay in touch with the natural world. The picture, which has used collage elements from high end fashion magazines, also comments on the fragile balance between consumerism and the preservation of our natural environment.
