Artwork Description

Small, vibrantly coloured, woven paintings painstakingly interwoven to create a larger, unusual work, which ripples in a gravity defying explosion of colour
.
Uplifting vibrancy and stunning colours come to life in my inspiring artworks that are infused with joy and wow. Dive into the eye-catching, bright optimism for total colour overload and a vivid jolt of happiness.

THE INTERWEAVE COLLECTION
The series combines my love of craft with my passion for painting, using weaving techniques to create stunning textile like works that appear to be lifting from the support.
I am passionate about creating artworks that present questions about expectations of what painting should be. It is fun to make works that challenge those assumptions and to see other peopleā€™s reactions as they too begin to think more deeply about their own beliefs about painting. Having one of my paintings on your wall will always be a talking point and I tend to attract buyers who want more than a decorative interior accessory. My overall aim for my artwork is that it is vibrant and eye-catching and that its stunning colour combinations bring happiness and joy to those who experience it.

THE PROCESS
This is a sculptural work that weaves multiple completely unsupported paintings that have no other material present (ie: no canvas or paper backing) in a way that resembles fabric. The technique is one I have been developing for a number of years, it is time consuming and requires a great deal of attention to detail, but it is also meditative, highly original and completely absorbing. I feel that paint is very underrated as a dry material and, for me, it is far more interesting in that state than when wet. The results also give me the choice of which side of the painting to show, so the works are always a combination of the usually hidden with the usually visible. I think this is like hiding secrets in plain sight and I find that a fascinating concept.

THE BACK STORY
My woven paintings explore the tenuous connections to people and places, and the way in which some of these connections continue regardless of location, whilst others are disrupted or lost. My practice uses craft techniques to create paintings that exist dimensionally and as such situates them in the space between Painting and Sculpture, Painting and Craft, not quite belonging anywhere, which mimics my feelings after multiple international moves.
I manipulate dried paint exploiting its flexibility through cutting and then integrating the fragile strips from various paintings in order to create a new, more secure whole. Weaving is the perfect method for creating some stability in this sea of disconnection.
Inspired primarily by the breakdown and subsequent rebuilding of social networks experienced during relocating informs my practice of constructing, deconstructing and remaking my work resulting in highly unique paintings that emulate the draping and folding of textiles.

The work is glued into place and gloss varnished.
It is secured on hidden, painted MDF board with a wooden framework which allows the painting to ā€˜floatā€™ a few centimetres (one inch) from the wall. It is fitted with D-rings and wire for immediate hanging.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
Born in the UK and settling in Australia in 2005 after 12 international moves in 17 years, I feel my life has been a patchwork of cultures. This plays out in my need to fragment my work. I seem incapable of seeing a painting as finished until it has been deconstructed and remade in various ways. I have an innate urge to chop things up and put them back together again.
I have been a full time artist for many years, working across various mediums, including fibre and glass. I have been featured in numerous newspaper and magazine articles and am a published author with my book ā€˜Sculptural Secrets for Mosaicā€™ as well as writing for other art authors. I have also been a guest speaker and writer for Radio National in their series on Colour Theory. I have been represented and exhibited in New York and Italy as well as Melbourne. My artworks are held in private collections in the UK, Sweden, Italy, the USA and Australia.
Currently I am studying for my BFA with a double major in Painting and Sculpture, graduating in August 2019.

1000 bright red 3D paint poppies with black centres cover a red canvas with black sides. Effect is extremely textural.Vertical stripes of blue, silver, black, white, and turquoise move down the canvas to extend their drips beyond the lower edge. A striking work that throws engaging shadows over the wall below.Molded paint petals in vibrant orange, pink, and red adhered closely together to cover the canvas in lush texture.Vibrant stripes of pink, orange and red form the background for similarly coloured blob circles that slide of the lower edge of the canvas.
