Back in March, before lock down in Victoria, I joined a crew burning wheat crop stubble in Skipton, Western Victoria. My favourite time of year is autumn, maybe because that is the season in which I was born. The smell of smoke during this season is one of my clear and fond memories growing up. In this painting, I tried to capture that familiar feeling on a perfect autumn afternoon when farmers are busy clearing the land ready for the sowing season. It was a fascinating challenge capturing the smoky haze across the gum trees bordering the paddock, the linear perspective of the rows of stubble and the dynamic movement of the flames slowly burning back against the direction of the wind. I was reminded of Monet's haystacks as I was creating the rows of stubble, remembering the way he used cool and warm colours to capture the light, shadow and distinctive structure. I hope this painting conveys this familiar farming practice and brings you as much enjoyment as I had creating it.
