“My Life had stood—a Loaded Gun—,” named after and inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem of the same name. The surface meaning is about a personified gun, but delve a little deeper into the text and Dickinson’s views on women and poetry are, perhaps, revealed: a woman and her words are not only powerful, but in a man’s world will stand the test of time. Here Kerry’s model holds outstretched arms - usually understood as being an expression of the power of God. The bold red and contrasting acqua and teal gives a fresh vibrancy against the dark background. A "popped" and bright interpretation of a still of a You Tube video.
Kerry has used a contemporary approach using techniques such as expressionism and pop art to capture her model in contrasting colours to give a sense of passion and energy.
