According to the creation myth of the Yidinji people, the Great Barrier Reef was formed after Bhiral, The Creator, threw lava from the sky.
As the story goes, Bhiral was angered after two brothers went out fishing, and speared a particular fish that they had been told not to hunt.
Frightened, the hunter ran home to tell his people what happened. Determined to stop the impending carnage the tribe began throwing rocks into the ocean.
Immediately the ocean began to calm down, so they threw more rocks into the sea forming a makeshift barrier. And so the Great Barrier Reef was born.
